VUKOVAR, Nov 28 (Hina) - The Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) has condemned the desecration of an Orthodox church in the eastern town of Vukovar whose entrance door was forced open by unidentified perpetrators last week.

The party said in a statement on Monday that following "the, unfortunately, successful attempts to desecrate Orthodox temples in Dalmatia, the latest case in Vukovar casts a heavy shadow on the further development of interethnic tolerance and coexistence of religious communities in the east of Croatia".

The statement said the doors of all religious temples in the civilised world were open to all people with good intentions and that "there is no need to force them open by foot".

According to the SDSS, the fact that nothing was taken from St. Petka's church indicates the church was not desecrated by persons with criminal records, "but by someone who in their delusion cannot stand any diversity, even if it is only a different confession".

The party called on state institutions to find mechanisms "to stop the trend of physical assaults on members of the Serb national minority and the desecration of their religious temples," and on the Croatian public "not to remain mute to such malicious acts".

Vukovar-Srijem County police chief Miroslav Janic told Hina that unidentified persons forced open the entrance door of St. Petka church in Vukovar in the evening hours of November 25, causing damage costing up to 200 kuna.
