SUBOTICA, Oct 31 (Hina) - Serbia and Montenegro Human and Minority Rights Minister Rasim Ljajic on Monday removed threatening graffiti from a building in Novi Sad, in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina, announcing stricter penalties for chauvinist messages.

"Nationalist graffiti contain elements of racial and religious intolerance and we have been given guarantees from the judiciary that those cases will be dealt with urgently and with strict penalties," said Ljajic, who removed graffiti against the Hungarian minority, which over the last two years has been exposed to an increasing number of assaults.

Those incidents prompted a debate on the position of national minorities in Serbia before the European Parliament in mid-October, which warned the Serbian authorities to prevent such incidents and introduce harsher penalties for those responsible for ethnically motivated incidents.

Ljajic said the Serbian prime minister would meet representatives of national minorities from Vojvodina and officials from Hungary to try to improve the disrupted ethnic relations.

The leader of the Democratic Alliance of Vojvodina Croats (DSHV), Petar Kuntic, told Hina he welcomed Ljajic's initiative and expressed hope that it would also create conditions for talks on the position of the Croat community in Vojvodina.

The DSHV last week issued a declaration on the position of Vojvodina Croats, stating that Croats were being discriminated against and were not protected as a national minority.
