The former Finnish president has said he will hear the positions of all sides included in the negotiations.
In Kosovo he is due to meet the Kosovo Negotiating Team, which is headed by President Ibrahim Rugova, political representatives of Kosovo Serbs, and the most senior officials of the UN Mission in Kosovo and the NATO-led Kosovo Force peacekeepers.
Kosovo media quoted Ahtisaari as saying on Sunday that his ultimate goal was to encourage Albanians and Serbs in Kosovo, as well as Pristina and Belgrade, to hold direct negotiations.
He was also quoted as saying that he would see the negotiations ended as soon as possible, and that everyone understood that the current situation in Kosovo could not go on forever.
