SPLIT, Nov 15 (Hina) - The 14th anniversary of the lifting of the military blockade of the Croatian Adriatic was marked on Tuesday with a wreath-laying ceremony in the southern port of Split, which also marked its day and the Day of Split County.

On 15 November 1991 the Yugoslav Navy patrol ship "Split" launched artillery attacks on the city's centre and the islands of Solta and Brac. Yugoslav Navy ships and jets shelled the old city nucleus, Diocletian's Palace, world heritage monuments, apartment buildings and the local stadium.

A ferry in the city port was hit in the shelling, and two seamen aboard were killed. Eleven civilians in the city centre were wounded in the attacks.

Despite the military superiority of the Yugoslav Navy, a strong response by the Croatian artillery from the mainland and islands forced Yugoslav Navy ships to withdraw towards Boka Kotorska Bay in Montenegro.
