NOVI SAD, Nov 2 (Hina) - Croatia's Ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro, Tonci Stanicic, has said that the position of the Croat minority in Serbia has improved significantly, but that some problems still exist regarding respect for its rights.

Stanicic said this in a lecture on Croatia's experience with the European Union held at an event organised by the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Novi Sad on Wednesday.

Commenting on a declaration on the position of Croats in Vojvodina, issued recently by the Democratic Alliance of Vojvodina Croats, the ambassador said the declaration could not have a negative impact on the two countries' relations.

"I see no reason for concern or negative reactions to the declaration, because as far as I know, the problems mentioned in the document really exist," Stanicic said.

He went on to say that the position of Croats in Serbia and Montenegro was much better than it used to be, because Croats were recognised as a national minority and had their national council. He added, however, that their not having a Croatian-language TV programme was a problem.

The ambassador also said that he was very satisfied with the degree of normalisation of the two countries' relations.
