ZAGREB, Oct 22 (Hina) - There should be no additional obstacles for Croatia in its EU entry talks because the country naturally belongs to the a united Europe, a member of the European Parliament and president of Germany's pan-European Union (PEU), Bernd Posselt, said in Zagreb on Saturday.

Posselt said this at an international conference of the Croatian pan-European Union (HPEU) called "European Constitution and European Union Prospects, Cooperation between the EU and the Mediterranean - Croatia 2007".

Croatia is an integral part of the European Union given its historical, geographic and cultural characteristics, Posselt said and expressed hope Croats would be able to participate in the elections for the European Parliament in 2009.

Stressing that in the EU there was still a lot of resistance towards Croatia, Posselt reiterated that the European Parliament was the only body that advocated the opening of the country's EU membership talks from the start.

If there had not been for political discrimination, Croatia would have joined the EU in May 2004, he said.

Posselt stressed the importance of Croatia in the region and Europe and added he was grateful to Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader because Sanader supports the peoples of Southeast Europe which also wanted to join the EU one day.

The president of the International pan-European Union, Alain Terrenoire, said the EU was in its the deepest crises. To overcome the crisis, reasonable EU borders must be set, EU institutions must be reformed and Europe's spiritual foundations based on Christian must be strengthened.

Otto von Habsburg, honorary president of the International PEU, said efforts must be made so that Croatia be admitted into the EU together with Bulgaria and Romania.

He expressed conviction the International PEU would continue to fully advocate Croatia's joining the EU in 2007.

The book "Otto von Habsburg - Biography" was presented at the conference. Croatian PM Sanader spoke about the book.

Sander said Croatia was already implementing European values and that it was waiting for the final confirmation of its membership of the EU.
