VIENNA, Oct 19 (Hina) - Increased efforts and closer international cooperation are necessary to effectively combat transnational organised crime, which is as dangerous as terrorism and corruption, an international conference in Vienna heard on Wednesday.

Vienna is hosting the second conference of member states signatories to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime. The two-week event ends on Thursday.

The final documents of the conference state the activities which the legislative, executive and judicial authorities of every signatory state must carry out before next year's conference.

The head of the Croatian delegation at the conference, Justice Minister Advisor Zeljko Horvatic, said Croatia had already carried out the majority of the commitments stemming from the UN convention and its protocols.

He recalled that Croatia had been among the first to sign and ratify the convention and its protocols against illegal migrations, trafficking in human beings, and the production and trafficking of weapons and ammunition.

Horvatic said Croatia had also adjusted its legislation to the convention and its protocols.

Croatian Assistant Justice Minister Ljiljana Cengic-Vodopija is one of the five deputy chairs of the conference which began on October 10. In attendance are delegations from 73 countries and representatives of nongovernmental organisations.
