The plant, the first of this kind in Croatia, is worth around 3.8 million euros and the power produced from waste gas will be delivered to the Croatian Power Company (HEP) under a 15-year contract.
The use of waste gas for power production will reduce negative environmental effects of the waste dump by 30 percent.
"Since Croatia is preparing to join the EU, which has bound its members to ensure at least 20 percent of energy from alternative sources by 2010, this plant is a modest contribution to that strategy," waste dump manager Zdravko Vac said.
Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic, who attended the opening ceremony, said Jakusevec was the most modern waste depot in this part of Europe.
