Addressing the event, the President's envoy, Dubravko Radosevic said that water, alongside oil, was becoming a key natural resource, and according to water resources per capita, Croatia could be ranked among 30 richest countries in the world. In Europe it is ranked as third.
An official of the Croatian Agriculture and Water Management Ministry, said Croatia possessed 32.8 thousand cubic metres of water per capita annually.
The distribution of water is carried out through 130 systems covering about three quarters of the national population.
The drainage system for waste water is not so well developed as homes of only 40 percent of the population are connected to the drainage ditches (public sewers), with a mere 12 percent having water purification systems.
Croatia's aim is to ensure drinkable water supplies for up to 90 percent of the population until 2015 when 75 percent of Croatians should be connected to the public drainage system.
The event in Opatija will last until 15 October.
