"I am happy that the EU member countries have launched membership talks with Croatia. That is another important step towards greater security, stability and prosperity in the entire western Balkan region and Europe," Schroeder said in a statement.
The German chancellor said he had always supported Croatia on its path to the EU, adding that he was confident that Croatia would continue on the path of reforms in order to achieve the common goal - EU membership.
"I am looking forward to the continuation of the close cooperation with Croatia and support to Croatia on its path to the European Union," Schroeder said.
