ZAGREB, Oct 4 (Hina) - The Croatian Helsinki Human Rights
Committee (HHO) said on Tuesday that the decision by the government to remove
the national broadcasting corporation HRT from the list of bodies of public
authority required under the law to provide information on its work to members
of the public, was "legally, politically and morally untenable". The
HHO Media Council said that the "unwarranted and unexplained" amendment of the
list was a step backwards for media freedom and civil rights. It noted that
the HRT was definitely a public institution with powers to ensure the
functioning of the democratic order and that it was undoubtedly subject to the
Right to Information Act.
The government made the decision on 22 September.
