The police said Rovisan activated a M74 bomb and that his motive had been personal because on September 13 he was supposed to start serving a 16-month prison sentence for a 1998 attempted robbery.
Krunoslav Borovec of the Zagreb police told the press he did not know if the judiciary had requested the arrest of Rovisan after he failed to appear to serve his jail term. He said the arrest should have been carried out by the police in Sisak, Rovisan's place of residence.
The police said yesterday that Rovisan had confessed to bringing and activating the explosive device into the embassy of his own will. He sustained a light injury to his left shin.
The police did not say if the confession had been made in the presence of an attorney.
Without revealing its sources, Croatian Television said last night it received a confirmation that the embassy had not requested a check on Rovisan before he was employed.
