MOSTAR, Oct 1 (Hina) - A former United States ambassador to Croatia and to Serbia and Montenegro has strongly criticised the chief prosecutor of the Hague war crimes tribunal, dismissing her accusations of the Vatican hiding a fugitive Croatian army general as nonsense.

Every time Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte comes here, it is counterproductive. She is talking nonsense. She says that the Vatican is hiding Ante Gotovina. I do not know who is next after the Vatican. Perhaps God?, William Montgomery said in an interview with Bosnian Serb television broadcast on Friday.

The interview was carried by the Mostar-based news agency NINA on Saturday.

The US diplomat said that the international community's policy was wrong because it made the integration of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia and Montenegro into the European Union and NATO conditional on the arrest of Gotovina, Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic and his military commander Ratko Mladic. He, however, stressed that the three men must be put on trial in The Hague.

Speaking of constitutional changes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montgomery said that they would have to be carried out either by domestic politicians or by the international community.

On the subject of Kosovo, Montgomery said that talks on the final status of the UN-administered province of Serbia, expected to start this year, would result in independence for the province under certain conditions.
