ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Hina) - The British Embassy in Zagreb did not requestCroatian intelligence services to check Damir Rovisan, a staffer whoplanted a letter bomb at the embassy on Monday, before he wasemployed, Croatian Television (HTV) said on Tuesday evening.
ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Hina) - The British Embassy in Zagreb did not request Croatian intelligence services to check Damir Rovisan, a staffer who planted a letter bomb at the embassy on Monday, before he was employed, Croatian Television (HTV) said on Tuesday evening.

Without revealing the source, HTV said they received a confirmation that the embassy had not requested a check on Rovisan before he was employed.

Interior Minister Ivica Kirin said earlier in the day that an investigation established that the 28-year-old embassy employee Rovisan brought the explosive device into the embassy and activated it, suffering a light injury to his left shin.

Kirin confirmed that Rovisan confessed to bringing and activating the device into the embassy, in which he had been working for four years, of his own initiative.

Rovisan was sentenced by the Zagreb County Court to 16 months in prison for robbery. The sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court and he was to have started serving his sentence on September 13. As he failed to report with prison authorities, the Prison Administration informed the competent judge and requested that he be brought in.

The minister did not say why Rovisan was not taken to prison to serve his sentence in the past week.

He said that Rovisan was officially arrested, that he gave a formal statement and that he would be charged with endangering lives and property and illegal possession of explosive materials.

The British Embassy continues to cooperate with Croatian authorities and it cannot comment on the case of its employee who admitted having detonated an explosion at his work place because it does not want to obstruct the investigation, embassy spokeswoman Tessa Fras told Hina.

On Wednesday morning, Rovisan was brought to the Zagreb County Court for questioning and was apparently not accompanied by an attorney.
