STRASBOURG, Sept 27 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in Strasbourg on Tuesday that his two-day visit to the European Parliament was important because he was scheduled to meet the leaders of the strongest parliamentary groups from whom he would try to get the support for the launching of Croatia's EU membership talks

He said he would expect the European People's Party (EPP), to which his Croatian Democratic Union also belongs, to find a way to include Croatia as one of the topics for the debate at the ongoing parliamentary session.

Sanader told this to Croatian reporters after arriving in Strasbourg and talking to representatives of the EPP's Committee on Foreign Policy and deputies from the pan-European Union group.

Sanader is also expected to hold talks with European Parliament President Josep Borrell and give a talk at a session of the EPP club of deputies. The session will be attended by the president of the club of deputies, Hans Gert Poettering and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

On Wednesday, Sanader will meet the leaders of the other two strongest groups in the European Parliament - European Social Democrats and the Green Party. Tomorrow afternoon, the Croatian PM will hold talks with the Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis.

"I believe that these talks, at which I will inform (EU officials) of the full implementation of the Croatian Government's Action Plan (to locate war crimes fugitive Ante Gotovina), will be extremely important," Sanader said.

Sanader reiterated that he would expect the EPP to find a way to include Croatia as one of the topics for the debate at the ongoing parliamentary session. Asked if the European Parliament Rule Book allowed that, because Croatia was not included in the session's agenda, Sanader said that he "did not arrive (in Strasbourg) to cause problems regarding the European Parliament's Rule Book, but is confident that the colleagues from the EPP will find a way to include Croatia in the agenda".

The Croatian PM said he expected to hold constructive talks with the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Carla del Ponte on Friday, and expressed conviction that all officials, with whom he is scheduled to hold talks, would advocate a positive development of the situation for Croatia.

"At this moment there are reasons to believe that all European bodies, including the Task Force on Sunday and the Council of Ministers on Monday, should evaluate the implementation of the Action Plan in the last six months," Sanader said.

"I expect a positive assessment and we all know what that would mean," he said.

The information about a meeting of the Task Force for Croatia on Sunday is still unofficial, but should the information be confirmed by official sources Sanader said he would personally be at the helm of Croatia's delegation.
