NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic on Thursday addressed the 60th session of the United Nations' General Assembly in New York, saying that her country advocates development, the eradication of poverty, the strengthening of global security and the fight against terrorism as well as the streamlining of the world organisation.

"We believe that the United Nations is still necessary for building a better world," the Croatian minister said adding all states benefit from the strong United Nations.

She urged for assistance to developing countries in a bid to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals, and for help to the new UN institutions - the Human Rights Council and the Peace Building Commission.

Development is one of the most important duties of the UN and the write-off of debts to undeveloped countries as well as enabling developing countries to have access to markets of developed countries are ways to go forward and eradicate poverty, Grabar-Kitarovic said, among other things.

She went on to say that the UN should be a leader in gathering the international community in efforts to create strategies for countering old and new security challenges, notably terrorism and organised crime.

The Croatian minister conveyed her country's regret at the failure to achieve progress in the fields of disarmament and ban on proliferation of nuclear arms.

She said that Croatia believed it was necessary to reform the UN Security Council regarding both the number of its members and models of its functioning.

Recalling that Croatia is a stability factor in south-eastern Europe and that it is contributing to global security through its engagement in over a half of the current UN peace missions, Grabar-Kitarovic stressed that Croatia had applied for a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2008-2009.

The minister hailed agreement reached on a final document on responsibility of the international community to protect civilians against genocide and war crimes.

Croatia also supports the establishment of the UN Democracy Fund the purpose of which is to encourage democracy in countries all over the world, and has already given financial backing for it, the minister added.
