This possibility was mentioned at today's informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Newport, Wales. Most of the EU foreign ministers will be in New York in late September to attend a session of the UN General Assembly.
According to diplomatic sources, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw indicated the possibility of convening an extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers for 26 September to adopt a negotiating framework for Turkey and possibly set a date for the start of membership talks with Croatia in case of a positive assessment of its cooperation with the Hague tribunal.
The first regular meeting of EU foreign ministers is set for 3 October when talks with Turkey are scheduled to start.
