SARAJEVO, Aug 16 (Hina) - The airport in the Bosnian capital of
Sarajevo will be closed to all air traffic from 2 to 10 September for the
purpose of reconstructing runways. In the said period air traffic will be
directed to airports of Mostar and Tuzla, the Sarajevo Airport authorities said
in a press release published by the local press on Tuesday. The
press release reads that the reconstruction of the Sarajevo airport's runways
"is necessary so as to enhance security and safety of flights".
So far there have been no indicators that safety and security of the
airport has been brought into question. However, it is well-known that during
the war when Serb forces besieged the city, a tunnel was dug below the airport
using as the only exit from the capital under siege. In 1997, the tunnel was
cited as the reason for the temporary closure of the airport when the runways
had also to be reconstructed.
Companies which offer regular flights to Sarajevo are Croatia Airlines,
Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Alitalia, Maleva, Turkish Airlines and CSA.
