MOSTAR, Aug 1 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia-Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) has expressed concern about statements by mufti Seid Smajkic of Mostar who has accused the Catholic Church of expansionism and support for the rigid political orientation of the HDZ BiH and Bosnian Croat forces of being an aggressor in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"The rhetoric used by the religious dignitary ten years after the end of the war is worrying... Islam, like Christianity and Judaism, should call for coexistence, peace and tolerance, especially in multiethnic and multicultural Bosnia-Herzegovina," spokesman Miso Relota told Hina on Monday.

Relota added that Smajkic's statements about the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) were false.

"What shows how much mufti Seid Smajkic was wrong is the 1992 HVO operation which liberated the Neretva River valley, including the eastern part of Mostar, from the Serbian-Montenegrin aggressor, after which Bosniaks too were able to return in large numbers to that part of the city. If the HVO had had the intentions which Smajkic claims it had, it would not have liberated the eastern part of the city," Relota said.

The Mostar-based Dnevni List daily described Smajkic's statements as inflammatory.

Smajkic made the statements at a meeting of young Bosniaks living abroad, held in Mostar last Saturday.
