ZAGREB, July 29 (Hina) - The media have given a significant contribution to discovering numerous cases of violence against children, but in a number of cases they have violated laws protecting the privacy of children, reads an appeal sent last week to the Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) by Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, State Secretary for Social Welfare Dorica Nikolic and the Ombudswoman for Children, Ljubica Matijevic Vrsaljko.

The HND has also received an obligatory instruction from Chief State Prosecutor Mladen Bajic regarding the protection of privacy in criminal cases involving children and minors.

Bajic says in the instruction that the UN Committee for the Rights of the Child had established that the Croatian media were not observing the Convention on the Rights of the Child and voiced concern about their violating the right of the child to privacy.

HND Council of Honour chairwoman Gordana Grbic has said that some reporters covering minors are systematically violating the Law on the Media and the HND's Code of Honour. She believes that the reasons for this are sensationalism or lack of knowledge.

The instruction by the State Prosecutor's Office came after the UN Committee for the Rights of the Child recommended that Croatia take necessary measures to ensure the media's full respect for the privacy of the child, and it implies that journalists and media acting unprofessionally could soon be targeted by the police and courts.
