ZAGREB, July 5 (Hina) - Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic and the new chief of the OSCE Mission to Croatia, Jorge Fuentes Monzonis-Vilallonga, met on Tuesday for talks on media legislation, minorities' rights and the role of civil society in the promotion of tolerance, Biskupic's office said in a press release.

The ambassador said he was satisfied with what had been done so far, highlighting the efforts the Ivo Sanader Cabinet was investing in the promotion of media freedoms and minorities' rights.

Monzonis-Vilallonga said this was why he wished Croatia to integrate with the European Union as soon as possible.

Speaking of amendments to the media legislation, notably the law on Croatian Radio and Television (HRT), he voiced confidence that with the help of experts from the Culture Ministry and the OSCE Mission, minor amendments would soon be adopted and adjusted with European standards because, he said, the Mission was expected to complete its activity in Croatia in a year's time.

Biskupic highlighted the problem of the non-transparent ownership structure of the media and the constant race for profit, which he said was the problem of all transition countries.

The minister said the government would do everything to strengthen the role of civil society and promote dialogue and tolerance instead of hate speech and sensationalist media reporting.

Regarding requests to amend the HRT law, Biskupic said the issue would be tackled towards the end of the year within a project of EU-related laws.

Regarding the promotion of tolerance, he said the Culture Ministry was regularly funding the programmes of all ethnic communities.
