ZAGREB, June 29 (Hina) - Five caretakers, including three nuns, working in a home for orphans and neglected children in Brezovica near Zagreb will be interviewed on suspicion of neglecting and abusing children living in the home, officials at the Zagreb Municipal Prosecutor's Office said on Wednesday.

Zagreb Municipal Prosecutor Vesna Abramovic confirmed this to Hina, declining to reveal the identity of the suspects or the nature of the acts they are charged with.

According to sources close to the Prosecutor's Office, three nuns and two women caretakers lacking the necessary qualifications, are suspected of having physically and emotionally abused children in the home until June 2002.

Abramovic said the prosecution had proposed that the court interview the suspects and a large number of witnesses, after which it would decide on further steps.

In the course of the ongoing investigation into the "Brezovica case" the police have confiscated documents from the Brezovica home and talked to Jelena Brajsa, the head of the Caritas charity from Zagreb, which is the owner of the Brezovica home, as well as with the former State Secretary for Welfare Issues, Nino Zganec. It is speculated that the two will be charged with covering up child abuse in the Brezovica home, including cases of sexual abuse. Both have dismissed the accusations.
