At police chief Ivica Franjic's proposal, the acting chief of the Osijek-Baranja County Police, Darinko Mikulic, was reinstated deputy chief of this department.
The ministry's Police Directorate decided to appoint Faber to prevent the possibility of any political pressure and to make sure that the county police will be fully independent in investigating allegations of war crimes in the eastern Croatian Osijek area in the early 1990s.
The Police Directorate also took into account that the Osijek-Baranja County Assembly refused to agree to the appointment of Mikulic county police chief.
Until now, Faber was an assistant chief at the Police Directorate.
Earlier today, the Interior Ministry set up a special crime squad to help the Osijek police investigate allegations of the killing of Serb civilians in Osijek in 1991 and 1992.
