Following today's terrorist attacks in London, "the security alert has been raised to an appropriate level," Mehun told reporters. He declined to give any details of the steps being taken by the Croatian police, citing security reasons.
Mehun told Hina that all segments of the police system "are appropriately prepared" and that they were cooperating with all elements of the Croatian security system as well as with international institutions.
The spokesman would not say if the police had been asked to step up security around foreign embassies in Croatia, particularly the British Embassy.
"Decision on the level of security to be enforced is taken on the basis of security assessments in the field," Mehun said.
According to the information available to the Ministry of the Interior, Croatia does not belong to a group of countries facing a direct threat of terror attack, the spokesman said.
"After the New York attacks four years ago we have undertaken a series of activities and measures in order to promptly observe and counter any possible terrorist attack and those measures have been in effect all along," Mehun said.
