Food and nonalcoholic beverages accounted for most of household spending in 2004 -- 21,600 kuna or 31.5 per cent, while the least money was spent on education -- a mere 510 kuna or 0.7 per cent.
The survey, based on 12 basic groups of products and services used by households to meet their vital needs, covered 2,847 households with 8,222 members.
The survey shows that private households in Croatia spent nearly a third of their income on food, 13.02 per cent on housing and energy, and 11.85 percent on transport.
Other expenditure items included clothing and footwear (8.06 per cent), other goods and services (7.72 per cent), culture and recreation (6.54 per cent), furniture (5.35 per cent), communications (5.35 per cent), alcoholic drinks and tobacco (4.06 per cent), and hotels and restaurants (3.41 per cent).
At the bottom of the list were health services, which accounted for 2.4 per cent of the household income, and education, 0.74 per cent.
