ZAGREB, July 8 (Hina) - An independent member of the Croatian Parliament, Slaven Letica, on Friday launched an initiative for the passage of a parliamentary declaration on the combined military and police operation "Storm" which ended the Serb insurgency in Croatia ten years ago.

Letica proposed that the declaration define Operation Storm as "an allied operation carried out with full international legitimacy, covered by UN Security Council resolutions and carried out with the support of the United States."

Letica told reporters in the Parliament that he had discussed his proposal with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader earlier in the day and that Sanader had nothing against such an initiative.

He added that he would consult law professor Ivo Josipovic of the leading opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Andrija Hebrang of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) regarding his initiative.

Letica believes that the adoption of such a declaration might help settle the controversies produced by allegations about the operation in indictments issued by the Hague war crimes tribunal.

Letica thinks that the declaration should be passed before the summer recess to mark the 10th anniversary of the operation on August 5.
