ZAGREB, July 7 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament on Thursday unanimously appointed Branko Hrvatin as president of the Supreme Court.

During a debate, some deputies pointed out that Croatia had been without president of the Supreme Court for two months, but noted that Parliament was not to blame for that.

Unlike the previous candidate, Hrvatin understands the spirit of democracy and is not asking for unanimous support in Parliament, said Frano Piplovic of the Democratic Centre (DC).

Social Democratic Party (SDP) deputy Ingrid Anticevic-Marinovic said she expected that the Supreme Court would play a more active role in legislative activities and judicial reform.

Former Supreme Court president Ivica Crnic's term expired on May 15, after which the President of the Republic, Stjepan Mesic, nominated Ranko Marijan to fill in the post. Marijan, however, made his nomination conditional on unanimous support in Parliament. Since he failed to receive it, he withdrew his nomination, after which Mesic nominated Hrvatin.
