Majority of parliamentary parties support Central Bank's annual report

ZAGREB, July 7 (Hina) - Most parties in the Croatian Parliament on Thursday supported the Croatian National Bank's annual report for 2004.

The Croatian Party of Rights (HSO) announced that it would abstain from voting for the report, criticising the central bank's attitude towards "life in Croatia".

The HSP criticised the central bank for not using its constitutional powers to deal with banks which, according to the HSP, "are exploiting the poverty of Croatian citizens by imposing made-up fees, such as those for managing, opening and closing accounts, and for administrative work".

Miroslav Rozic of the HSP warned that the State Audit Office had not had access to the central bank since 1999, saying that one can only wonder who could control the central bank and whose institution it really was.

Other opposition parties praised stricter monetary policy measures by which the central bank had managed to put under control the pressure on the appreciation of kuna and inflation.

Saying that these "sterilisation" measures have proved successful, Mato Crkvenac of the Social Democratic Party criticised the Government and Finance Minister Ivan Suker, saying that they had no reason to pressure the National Bank.

Parliament will resume its session on Friday when it is expected to debate a bill of amendments to the Law on Croatian Radio Television, moved by the Croatian People's Party.
