ZAGREB, June 9 (Hina) - If parliament adopts a government amendment to a draft decision on the holding of military exercises in 2005, Croatian soldiers will depart for an exercise in Minnesota on Friday based on a decision by the supreme commander and their departure will not have to be approved by parliament.

Explaining the amendment in parliament on Thursday, Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic said the exercise was a bilateral military exercise within the NATO Partnership for Peace programme.

Roncevic said Croatian soldiers could take part in the US exercise based on a decision by the president of the republic given that parliament approved an international agreement to that effect back in 2001.

Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said he today received the decision whereby the supreme commander of the Armed Forces, President Stjepan Mesic, sent 36 Croatian soldiers to the military exercise to be held within Partnership for Peace in Minnesota from June 10 to 27.

Seks said the government would seek parliament's approval for the Croatian Army's participation in Partnership for Peace exercises to be held this year in Albania, Georgia, and Ukraine.
