BELGRADE, June 24 (Hina) - The trial of former members of the Territorial Defence (TO) from Vukovar and paramilitary units, indicted for the 1991 war crime at Ovcara near the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar, ended before the Belgrade War Crimes Court on Friday. The trial, which has indicated the involvement of some other senior officers of the former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) in the crime, was adjourned until July 4.

Today's hearing was held behind closed doors because witnesses who testified had turned the state's evidence.

All indictees - 16 members of the TO from Vukovar and the paramilitary unit "Leva Supoderica", established in Sid in 1991 by the Serbian Radical Party - denied having committed the crime they are charged with - the murder of 200 civilians from Vukovar Hospital on November 20, 1991.

The court heard numerous witnesses, including those from Croatia, who were also taken to Ovcara, but escaped the massacre because somebody helped them. Numerous witnesses from the former JNA, members of its Guards Brigade and 80th Motorised Brigade from Kragujevac, testified as well.

Their testimonies indicate that the former JNA left the captured civilians at the mercy of Serb TO members and volunteers.

Last week the court heard witness Bogoljub Kijanovic, who said that JNA officer Mile Mrksic, indicted for the Ovcara crime by the Hague war crimes tribunal, had turned down the request to direct three buses with prisoners from Ovcara to Sremska Mitrovica, in Serbia.

"It was believed that the people at Ovcara won't live to see the next day," the witness said.

Attorney Dragoljub Todorovic, who represents the families of the Ovcara victims, believes, like other attorneys for the victims' families, that apart from the "Vukovar Three" some some other high ranking JNA officers should be brought to justice for the Ovcara crime.

The Ovcara trial started in March last year.
