BELGRADE, May 30 (Hina) - Italian authorities have approved the transfer of former Yugoslav Air Force pilot Emir Sisic to Serbia and Montenegro to serve his prison term, the Minister for Human and Minority Rights of Serbia and Montenegro, Rasim Ljajic, said on Monday.

Sisic has been sentenced by an Italian court to 15 years' imprisonment for shooting down a European Union helicopter over Croatia in January 1992, when five people were killed.

The transfer was approved provided that a court in Serbia executes the verdict of the Italian court, Ljajic said in an interview with Beta news agency.

Ljajic said that the documents sent by the Italian Ministry of Justice would be forwarded to the District Court in the northern city of Novi Sad, which has jurisdiction over the Sisic case.

He said that the execution of the verdict handed down by the Italian court did not mean a new trial in Serbia but its upholding by the competent Serbian court in accordance with the European Convention on the Transfer of Convicted Persons.

Sisic was initially sentenced to life imprisonment, but the Appeals Court in Rome reduced the sentence to 15 years.

Sisic was arrested in Hungary in May 2002 on an Interpol warrant issued by Croatia. Hungary extradited him to Italy because four of the five persons killed in the attack on the helicopter were Italian nationals.
