THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, June 9 (Hina) - The Hague war crimes tribunal on Thursday approved the provisional release of ex-Yugoslav Army chief of staff General Momcilo Persic, who is charged with persecution, murder and attacks on civilians in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Trial Chamber III said it was confident the accused would return to the trial and not pose a threat to anyone, adding that it recently granted release pending trial for other indictees of the same rank who were given guarantees from Serbia and Montenegro.

The trial chamber said that Perisic gave investigators a statement contained on 35 CDs.

Perisic, 61, surrendered to the UN court on March 7, applying for provisional release on May 11, but the Prosecution turned down the request on May 25.

Perisic is charged with war crimes against civilians and violations of the laws and customs of war committed during the 1992-5 Sarajevo siege, the 2-3 May 1995 shelling of Zagreb, and the killing of nearly 8,000 Muslims from Srebrenica, Bosnia, on 11-18 July 1995.
