ZAGREB, June 22 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met in Brussels on Wednesday to sign a declaration on the launching of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), which is aimed at suppressing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and related equipment, technologies and materials, the Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry said in a statement.

Croatia and the United States have already signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation to prevent the transportation of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems, and related materials by sea.

The signing of this agreement reflects the two countries' commitment and determination to cooperate in making the open sea a prohibited zone for terrorism and hazardous weapons, the statement says.

Croatia has recognised early the danger of global terrorism and the threat of weapons of mass destruction and related equipment, technologies and materials, and taken a leading role in the region to prevent the flow of weapons of mass destruction and related materials, reads the statement.

More than 60 countries are parties to the PSI.

The PSI does not have formalised support such as a secretariat, seat or president, and it consists of agreements between parties to the PSI on consensual measures taken to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction through cooperation between police and military forces and foreign ministries.

The declaration on the PSI consists of the basic goals and methods of cooperation within the Initiative and it envisages that all measures taken by partner countries have to be in line with national and international laws, rules and procedures.

The PSI promotes the spirit and content of Resolution 1540 of the UN Security Council which urges all UN member-countries to take joint measures to prevent trade in weapons of mass destruction, reads the declaration carried by the Foreign Ministry.

Grabar Kitarovic and Rice signed the declaration in Brussels, where they were attending a day-long conference on the reconstruction of Iraq.
