WASHINGTON, May 31 (Hina) - Croatia took part in Washington on Tuesday in the marking of the second anniversary of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), of which it is a member.

On this occasion, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told the diplomatic corps at the State department the PSI was created to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, proving successful thus far.

The PSI was launched by US President George Bush in 2003 and has more than 60 member-countries.

Croatia is contributing to the PSI's activities aimed at combating international terror.

Representing it at the Washington meeting was Assistant Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tomislav Vidosevic, who said that Croatia's participation in the PSI proved it was a factor of stability in Southeast Europe and in the world.

Vidosevic said the Croatian government recently adopted a decision on the establishment of a commission to address better control of arms shipments and the security of citizens and the constitutional order.

On Wednesday, Croatia and the United States will sign the Shipboarding Agreement based on which, under the principle of reciprocity, Croatia will become actively engaged in the prevention of the proliferation and trade of hazardous weapons and materials.
