PODGORICA, June 8 (Hina) - The Montenegrin parliament on Wednesday adopted a declaration on association with the European Union which states that the process of European integration is a strategic interest of Montenegrin citizens.

The document does not mention Montenegro's status, which was one of the conditions for the declaration to be adopted, apart from the ruling coalition, by the leading opposition party from a bloc supporting Montenegro's union with Serbia - the Socialist People's Party (SNP), and parties representing ethnic Albanians.

The ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) pointed to the fact that the declaration was adopted by consensus, which it said confirmed Montenegro's democratic potential and the great trust in institutions that were expected to conduct European integration processes.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) said that the document was in the interests of all citizens and peoples of Montenegro, which is said was "nearing the accomplishment of its most important political goal - independence".

SNP leader Predrag Bulatovic said that Montenegro had no future as long as Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic was in power and that by supporting the declaration the SNP was giving "a strong contribution to the European position and strengthening of the state union".
