ZAGREB, June 20 (Hina) - The first hearing in the trial of Alen Budaj, charged with defamation by war crimes suspect Milivoj Asner, began at the Zagreb Municipal Court on Monday.

Budaj told Hina the next hearing was scheduled for November 4. He said he did not know on what basis Asner had pressed charges against him, labelling the proceedings a farce because he was being sued by a person accused of crimes after Budaj submitted documents to the police and the prosecution.

According to Budaj, Asner's counsel said at the hearing that the plaintiff stood by his charges although she was unfamiliar with his whereabouts.

Budaj collected documents allegedly confirming that the 92-year-old Asner committed war crimes in the Second World War. Asner went missing from his house in Daruvar last year after Budaj reported him to the Simon Wiesenthal Centre.

The County Court in Pozega launched an investigation against Asner last month on suspicion that in his capacity as police chief in Pozega in 1941 and 1942, he committed war crimes against civilians.

Earlier this month, after the Croatian media said that Asner was living in Klagenfurt, the Simon Wiesenthal Center called on the Austrian government to take steps against him.

Today, the centre's director, Efraim Zuroff, supported Budaj, saying in a statement it was ridiculous that charges had been pressed against a man who greatly contributed to the research and proving of war crimes committed by the Ustasha.

Zuroff said that Asner had still not been located and that he expected the Croatian authorities to charge Asner with war crimes and take immediate steps to make sure that he answered for those charges.
