ZAGREB, June 2 (Hina) - The general assembly of the Croatian Supreme Court on Thursday positively assessed Croatian President Stjepan Mesic's proposal for the appointment of Ranko Marijan as new Supreme Court President.

Of the 42 Supreme Court judges, 35 took part in today's session, and all of them greenlighted the nomination of Marijan, the Supreme Court said in a press release. Marijan, who is also a Supreme Court judge, was not present at the part of session dealing with his nomination.

The Supreme Court is going to inform the Croatian parliament of its position since the Sabor is authorised to make a final decision on the appointment of the court's president.

The position of Supreme Court judges on the candidate proposed by President Mesic is not biding.

Marijan has been working in the Croatian judiciary since late 1970. Last year he became a Supreme Court judge.

During the SDP-led coalition government he was for a short time Deputy Justice Minister and left the post over his disagreements with the then Justice Minister Stjepan Ivanisevic.

Marijan will succeed Ivica Crnic whose term expired on 15 May this year.
