BELGRADE, June 15 (Hina) - Twenty-three Serb refugees on Wednesday set out from Belgrade to their pre-war homes in the municipalities of Pakrac, Dvor, Petrinja and Sunja in Croatia in a convoy organised by the UNHCR and the Danish Council for Refugees.

This was the 400th convoy organised by the two international organisations over the past nine years. Its departure came ahead of International Refugee Day, which is observed on June 20.

Since 1996, about 13,000 Serb refugees have returned to Croatia with the assistance of the UNHCR and its partners in Serbia and Montenegro. According to the UNHCR, 52,000 people have arranged their return by themselves.

The UNHCR says that 800 refugees have returned to Croatia this year and that about 1,200 more are on a waiting list.

The Danish Council for Refugees became involved in the refugee return project in 2000.

Funds for the return of Serb refugees to Croatia have been secured by the European Union and the European Reconstruction Agency.
