SUBOTICA, May 18 (Hina) - The head of the Democratic League of Croats in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina (DSHV) said on Wednesday that the success of a political party representing the Serb minority in Croatia in Sunday's local elections was partly due to the improving position of the Serb community in Croatia.

"It is evident that the position of the Serb minority in Croatia is improving by the day, which had an impact on the turnout of refugees for the vote," Petar Kuntic said.

Speaking of organised trips of Serb refugees to Croatia to vote, the DSHV leader said that the same rule could not be applied in the case of Croat refugees from Serbia.

He said that about 20,000 Croats had left or had been expelled from the Srijem region of northwestern Serbia during the 1990s war in Croatia, and that it was not clear how many of them wanted to return to their pre-war homes or were interested in participating in local elections in Vojvodina and Serbia.

Kuntic said that the DSHV had to concentrate on "animating the existing Croat electorate" in order to achieve better representation of the Croat community in the parliaments of Serbia and Vojvodina and in local councils.

The DSHV is the only political party representing the Croat minority in Serbia.
