ZAGREB, June 2 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Thursday asked the parliament to authorise an increase in the number of Croatian troops participating in the NATO-led ISAF peace mission in Afghanistan.

Croatia has been involved in the US-led mission since February 2003 with a 50-strong Military Police contingent serving on a six-month basis. The government is now asking the parliament to increase the number to 150 with a possibility of rotation.

The Ivo Sanader cabinet also asked the parliament to be allowed to define the duration of rotation and the number and organisational structure of military personnel being sent to Afghanistan.

The necessary 45 million kuna for the entire job has already been earmarked in the state budget.

Earlier this year, Croatia, Macedonia, and Albania, aspirants to NATO membership, confirmed their intention to send a joint medical team to Afghanistan to serve as part of the ISAF mission.

Croatian Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic said that the 12-member medical team would consist of four members from each country.
