BELGRADE, May 31 (Hina) - An arrest warrant for Mirjana Markovic, the wife of Hague war crimes tribunal indictee Slobodan Milosevic, has been put out of force at the request of her defence counsel, who pledged she would appear at a main hearing scheduled for September, Belgrade District Court spokeswoman Ivana Ramic told Radio B92 on Tuesday.

The warrant for Markovic has been withdrawn at the request of the competent court, which informed Interpol's Belgrade office, said Ramic.

Markovic is accused of mediating in the unlawful allocation of flats owned by the Serbian government. She left the country in February 2003, just before the trial began.

In the meantime, the Serbian Interior Ministry suspected Markovic of involvement in the August 2000 murder of former Serbian President Ivan Stambolic, whose body was found in March 2003 as part of an investigation into the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.

The ministry called on Markovic to return to the country for an interview. When she failed to do so, it issued a warrant for her arrest.

According to the Serbian media, Markovic is hiding in Russia, as is her son Marko Milosevic, who is also on an Interpol arrest warrant.
