ZAGREB, May 15 (Hina) - The election monitoring nongovernmental organisation GONG said on Sunday evening that the latest Croatian local elections saw a smaller number of irregularities that those held four years ago and that the voting proceeded in a tolerant and democratic atmosphere.

A small number of irregularities was noted and most of them referred to breaches of the ban on electioneering.

"The elections passed with a smaller number of irregularities than those in 2001, the polling committees are better educated and performed their job well," the GONG spokeswoman Sandra Pernar told Hina this evening.

GONG will issue its complete and final report on these local polls after the announcement of the final results of the elections.

GONG representatives declined to comment on the turnout which has been one of lowest since first democratic elections in the country in 1990.

About 1,000 GONG observers monitored local elections in Croatia on Sunday. In addition, GONG had 105 mobile teams, each consisting of two observers who visited some 1,500 polling stations.
