ZAGREB, April 24 (Hina) - The official campaign ahead of Croatia's country-wide local elections, scheduled for 15 May, began at Saturday midnight, and will last by the midnight of 13 May when a ban on electioneering takes effect.

Croatians will elect their representatives in 426 municipal and 123 city councils, 20 county assemblies and in the assembly of the City of Zagreb.

Citizens of age 18 and above elect their representatives, namely a total of 5,392 members of municipal councils, 2,062 councillors in cities, 872 members of county assemblies and 51 members in Zagreb City Assembly, by secret ballot, and the proportional representation system is the model of the local polls, which means that the area of a municipality, city or county makes up a constituency.

Parties running in the polls must win at least five percent of ballots to pass the election threshold, i.e. to win a seat in a council or assembly.

Members of representatives bodies are elected for a four-year-term.

Last local elections were held on 20 May 2001, and were covered by about 50 million kuna (approx. 6.6 million euros) ensured from local authorities' budgets.
