Glavas to head independent slate for Osijek at local elections

OSIJEK, April 21 (Hina) - Branimir Glavas, a member of Parliament on Thursday ousted from the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), told the press he would lead an independent list in the city and county of Osijek at local elections in May.

Commenting on the latest developments in the HDZ, he said the party had not recognised the importance of the regional concept of the soon to be founded Association of Citizens of the Croatian Democratic Assembly of Slavonia and Baranja.

Glavas said the aim of the association was to ensure that the east Slavonia and Baranja regions developed equally as Zagreb, Dalmatia or Istria because the unemployment rate there was 33 per cent and because eastern Croatia had suffered the most in the 1990s war and contributed the most to free and independent Croatia.

He said the cracks in the relationship between HDZ deputies from Osijek County and the HDZ leadership appeared during the adoption of the national budget for this year after none of their amendments had been adopted.

According to Glavas, the HDZ programme was outdated and needed to be revised, including the regional branch. He dismissed accusations that the regional branch had autonomist views.

Asked to comment on the meeting of the HDZ National Council in Zagreb, under way during his press conference, and the possibility of being ousted from the party, he said he was not interested in that.

Also present at the press conference were the presidents of the Osijek city and county branches of the Social Liberals (HSLS), who signed a coalition agreement with the HDZ. The leader of the HSLS Osijek County branch, Zdravko Vukic, said his party advocated the regionalisation of Croatia.

Also in attendance was the chairman of the HDZ Osijek Municipal Committee, Vladimir Sisljagic, who earlier today tendered his resignation but which the committee rejected. Last night, the HDZ Osijek County Committee rejected Glavas's resignation to the post of committee chairman.

Both committees concluded that if Glavas was ousted from the party, the committees' members, the electoral headquarters and coordinating body of chairmen of HDZ municipal and city committees would leave the HDZ.

In the meantime, the HDZ National Council unanimously ousted Glavas, Sisljagic and Ivan Drmic for "acting contrary to the party's programme".
