ZAGREB, April 13 (Hina) - Parliamentary deputies of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said on Wednesday that the findings of the state audit for 2003, which was the last year of the former government's term, showed that the former government had poorely managed state finances.

Opposition deputies urged competent bodies to take appropriate measures so that the findings of the audit would not remain a dead letter.

HDZ deputies said the audit only confirmed their claims that the former government had understated the budgetary deficit for 2003.

Sime Prtenjaca of the HDZ said that by poorely keeping record of expenses the former government had incurred additional debts.

The Social Democrats (SDP) disagreed with the claims, stating that the ruling party was looking for excuses for its poor governance of the state.

Dragica Zgrebec of the SDP said the government was not doing anything to remove irregularities that kept recurring. She also disagreed with the government's proposal that deputies only take note of the report on the audit instead of adopting it.

Miroslav Rozic of the Party of Rights (HSP) said that the police, the state prosecution and other judicial bodies should act upon the audit findings instead of focusing all of their strength on tracking down one man, namely General Ante Gotovina.

Rozic warned about irregularities in the spending of state funds in 2003, especially in the ministries of reconstruction and the economy, but concluded that no concrete measures would probably be taken to punish the irregularities.
