ZAGREB, March 18 (Hina) - Croatian Journalists Association (HND) president Dragutin Lucic and the journalists who complained to the parliamentary committee on home affairs and national security about having been under surveillance by the Counterintelligence Agency (POA) said on Friday they were "relatively satisfied" with the investigation's findings and the committee's conclusions, the HND said in a press release.

The journalists who were under POA surveillance maintain that the conclusions are a significant step forward from similar cases in the past, read the press release issued after Lucic's meeting with Gordan Malic of Globus weekly, Marijo Kavain and Ivanka Toma of Jutarnji List daily, and Zeljko Peratovic of Vjesnik daily.

They concluded that the competent bodies which knew or should have known about the surveillance should apologise to the five journalists for the professional and personal suffering they sustained.

They said the security services should be reformed in keeping with democratic standards, including adjusting the law on security services to the Constitution and suspending the government's decree on obligations regarding national security of legal and physical persons in telecommunications.

They said security services should stop interfering in journalism and that in 10 days they would decide what to do to protect their human and professional rights.

The parliamentary home affairs and national security committee concluded on March 15 there existed grounds to suspect that the POA breached five journalists' human rights and fundamental freedoms without reason. Former POA chief Franjo Turek had accused the five journalists of involvement in operations which undermined national security.
