ZAGREB, April 13 (Hina) - Croatia is currently participating in nine United Nations peacekeeping missions with 31 personnel, including 26 unarmed military observers, a deputy mission chief, three staff officers and a military psychologist, according to information from the Ministry of Defence.

Talks are under way on the participation of Croatian servicemen in the UN peacekeeping missions in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Golan Heights (UNDOF). On July 15, 2004 the Croatian Parliament authorised the participation of two members of the Croatian Armed Forces in each of the two missions as military observers.

Seven Croatian officers are currently serving in the UN mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), six are involved in the UNAMSIL mission in Sierra Leone and six in the UNMOGIP in India and Pakistan.

The participation of Croatian military personnel in the UN peacekeeping missions costs the Croatian government about 1.9 million kuna a year, which includes costs of equipment, a portion of field allowance, a medical checkup and one visit to the country. In addition, the servicemen and servicewomen receive their regular monthly pay.

Croatia is also involved in the NATO-led ISAF mission in Afghanistan where a Croatian Military Police platoon is attached to the German contingent.
