The Troika comprises of representatives of Luxembourg, the country that is currently presiding over the EU, its predecessor, the Netherlands, and Great Britain, the country that will preside over the bloc in the second half of 2005.
Prime ministers, members of the European People's Party (EPP), who gathered in Meise, outside Brussels, before the start of the EU summit, expressed support to a proposal that a discussion on Croatia be held during the two-day summit meeting of European Union heads of state or government,
EPP President Wilfried Martens reiterated the position of this organisation, which includes European Democratic Christians and members of People's Parties, that Croatia was fully cooperating with the Hague tribunal. Martens added that it was important that the EU alone should verify the cooperation. It is not enough to rely only on indications made by the chief prosecutor of the Hague tribunal, Carla del Ponte, he said.
Last week, the EU Council of Foreign Ministers decided to postpone Croatia's membership talks with the bloc until the EU reaches consensus on whether Zagreb is fully cooperating with the UN war crimes tribunal.
