BRUSSELS, March 23 (Hina) - European Union leaders agreed on Wednesday to set up a task force for Croatia so as to determine the degree of Croatia's cooperation with the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg and chairman of the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker, said.

We have set up a task force comprised of representatives of the European Commission, the Council of Ministers, the present and the future EU chairing country - Luxembourg and Great Britain - and Austria which will chair the EU in the first half of 2006, Juncker said.

The task force is expected to hold consultations with Croatian authorities and representatives of the Hague tribunal and submit a report to the EU Council of Ministers, which will then make a decision accordingly, Juncker said.

Last week, the EU Council of Ministers decided to postpone Croatia's membership talks with the bloc until the EU reaches a consensus on whether Zagreb is fully cooperating with the UN war crimes tribunal.

Juncker said that no time frame had been set by which the task force was expected to draw up the report on Croatia's cooperation and added that the Luxembourg EU Presidency was in charge of the details.

Diplomatic sources said it had not been decided yet whether the task force would be composed of prime ministers, ministers or lower ranking officials or whether the group would travel to Zagreb and The Hague or hold consultations in Brussels.

Asked whether the task force could be expected to complete the report by the next meeting of EU ministers scheduled for April 25 and 26, the source said it was possible for the task force to draw up the report in four weeks.

Even though it was not listed on the official agenda of the spring summit, the debate on Croatia was initiated by a group of countries advocating opening Croatia's EU entry talks as soon as possible -- Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.

Later today, the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU will inform the prime ministers of accessing and candidate countries of the results of the spring summit.
