ZAGREB, April 9 (Hina) - The Croatian Physicians' Trade Union (HLS) has risen above the law as it wants to take medical doctors to strike on Monday despite a court ban, Health Minister Neven Ljubicic said at a press conference on Saturday.

The Zagreb County Court decided on Friday to ban the strike following a claim filed by the Ministry of Health.

"I am confident that Croatian physicians will again demonstrate their patriotism, just as they did in the 1990s, and that they will respect the law," Ljubicic said.

Ljubicic said that doctors who went on strike on Monday would not be fired, but stressed that he would demand that "the instigators" take the consequences. He was referring to the HLS and its leader, Ivica Babic.

The government has issued a decree increasing physicians' pay by 10 per cent.

Ljubicic said he was optimistic about the strike, citing the results of an opinion survey conducted by the ministry this week among 237 doctors. The poll showed that 29 per cent of physicians were in favour of the strike, 15 per cent said they would not go on strike, while 56 per cent were undecided.

"This shows that more than 70 per cent of physicians are not sure whether a strike is a good solution, which leaves room for dealing with outstanding issues through negotiation," the minister said.
